International Rescue Committee

As a Career Development Specialist at the International Rescue Committee – a global humanitarian relief organization and U.S. refugee resettlement agency – I partner with local WorkSource centers to offer WIOA Adult programming. Federally funded through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, WIOA provides low-income individuals and recipients of public benefits with individualized career counseling and training opportunities. Primarily, my clients are refugees, asylees, asylum seekers, and Special Immigrant Visa holders whom I assist with resumes, cover letters, interview skills, job search and applications, and vocational/educational advising. I also provide case management assistance with connecting to housing, public benefits (i.e. SNAP, Apple Health, ORCA Lift), childcare, and Unemployment Insurance. My goal is to help IRC’s clients gain the skills, education, and supports they need to thrive in the workplace and build their careers in the U.S.

Prior to this, I served as a  Washington Service Corps College and Career Coach at IRC. I worked with refugee and immigrant high school students in South King County to help them prepare for life after high school. Our ELL in-class support and after-school programs provided both group and 1:1 coaching on topics such as resumes, cover letters, interviews, professional workplace behaviors, communication, post-secondary education, and college applications. As a part of this role, I am was involved in developing a college and career curriculum for distribution amongst IRC U.S. offices.

As a part of IntoUniversity‘s University Mentoring Scheme, I met weekly with a year eight student to help her develop plans to achieve her academic, social, and future goals. We researched careers together, discussed study habits, chatted about university life, and even baked cookies and pizza during our meetings.

As an intern with the Tustin Public Schools Foundation, I contributed to a collaboration with the Tustin Unified School District to help develop the College Connect college application mentoring program for underserved high school students. I also acted as a classroom volunteer at Tustin Summer Academy and helped with SWOT analysis, various administrative tasks, and promotion for the annual Dinosaur Dash.

Reach the World

While living in Romania, I was a correspondent for Reach the World, a nonprofit that connects college students and recent graduates traveling and living abroad with K-12 classrooms across the US. I wrote approximately two articles a week about life in Romania for a sixth-grade class in Lexington, NE, and conducted video conferences with class to share my experiences and answer student questions.

Teaching & Education

Goldsmiths Student Ambassador

As a Goldsmiths Student Ambassador, I engaged in Outreach and Widening Participation efforts with the school by leading visits from primary and secondary schools, offering campus tours, working at Open Days, designing subject taster sessions, and helping facilitate the Facebook group for incoming postgraduates.

C2 Education

As a teacher at C2 Education, I worked with one to three students per session on English, reading, writing, and SAT/ACT preparation. This included designing lesson plans, guiding student work, and tracking student progress in detailed logs.

Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship

During the 2015-2016 academic year, I worked as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant at Universitatea Alexandru Ioan Cuza in Iasi, Romania. The Fulbright program is the flagship international exchange program sponsored by the United States government. Every year, thousands of recent graduates and established scholars travel abroad on Fulbright grants to teach, study, and conduct research in more than 140 countries. Through these exchanges, Fulbright works to foster mutual understanding between people of the United States and other countries.

During the fall semester at UAIC I taught six practical English conversation and listening courses to over 130 first-year students. During the spring semester I taught text discussion for first and third-year students. The syllabus for my second semester classes is available here. In addition to my teaching, I also facilitated book groups and participated in events with the American Corner Iasi.

Odegaard Writing and Research Center

From September 2013-June 2015, I worked as a writing consultant at the University of Washington’s Odegaard Writing and Research Center.  The OWRC works with students in all disciplines and at all stages of the writing process, using conversation as a way to generate meaning.

My work at the OWRC was very influential in shaping my teaching philosophy. This short video explains the OWRC’s pedagogical approach.

From January-June 2015 I was also a Targeted Learning Community Facilitator, leading weekly course-specific study and writing support groups for English Language Learners.
